Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of “If it feels good, do it!”

The Minnesota State Legislature just wrapped up a most acrimonious two years of one side working overtime to force multiple forms of legislation upon Minnesotans that have at their core a foundation of Marxism /Socialism /Communism, while the other side worked desperately, and at a great disadvantage, to stop the carnage directed at our people and our Constitutional Republican system.

Two pieces of legislation that might best reveal the motives of the God-denying, America-destroying left were the revisions to the Human Rights Act and the attempt to amend the state constitution with the very deceptively-named Equal Rights Act. The party in power wanted to grant “rights” to some by stripping the constitutional rights of others and there was nothing “equal rights” about it. Fortunately, neither happened.

Whether Minnesotans are aware of it or not, the current majority party has little, if any, respect for the Constitutions of either the United States or Minnesota. They have even less respect for your 1st Amendment rights. I remind you that the current majority party is known for saying that inclusivity trumps your 1st Amendment rights. Let that simmer for a while.

The debate over the idea of individual “rights” continues to foment throughout our state and nation. I believe it’s time we revisit what our Founding Fathers meant when they addressed our “rights” in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States.
Here are some highlights:

  • Our rights come from God, not the government. The term “unalienable rights” means God-given rights cannot be removed, traded, or even given away. They are inherent in every human being as persons not only created by God but created in the image of God.

  • The rights listed (Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness) is not an exhaustive list. Nearly 300 rights are spelled out in the Constitution.

  • The job of governments is to secure, that is, to preserve and protect the rights of the citizens.

  • These rights are based on self-evident truths.

    • In today’s language we might say that our rights are based on objective truths that are so obvious that anyone with working brain cells would understand, acknowledge, and defend them. Yes, there is such a thing as absolute truth.

  • The Right to Life means the right to  . . . . LIFE!

    • “Thou shalt not kill” (Exodus 20:13) confers to all humans, born and unborn, a right to life. The more accurate understanding of the Hebrew phrase in this verse changes the command slightly to “Thou shalt not murder”. The legal definition of murder includes, “The killing of a human being with malice aforethought; the particularly heinous crime of secret slaying”.

Modern medical science is clear that human life begins at conception. Therefore, in the most accurate understanding of the Biblical teaching, all abortions are the murder of a human being. All physician-assisted suicides are the murder of a human being. Killing a cop in South Minneapolis or two cops and a first-responder fire fighter in Burnsville is murder.

When is murder ever okay?

Our purpose here is not to heap guilt or shame on those who already feel guilt or shame for having had or participated in an abortion. Jesus offers complete forgiveness, redemption, wholeness, and restoration to anyone for any sin they have committed, including abortion. When the Pharisees brought the woman caught in adultery before Jesus (where was the man by the way?), He taught that those who had no sin were allowed to cast the first stone. Nobody cast a stone then. Nobody is casting stones now.

Our dilemma in Minnesota is simple: How do we go from being a state that has the most liberal abortion laws (murdering babies) in the nation to becoming a state that abolishes abortion and protects all human life?

This is the great debate. Principles dictate abolition. Pragmatics ask, “How do we get there?”

Short of a wave of spiritual revival and renewal through a powerful move of God’s Holy Spirit, how do we move the needle?

It is said that 66% of Americans favor current abortion laws, which allow for taxpayer funded abortion on demand at any time for any reason, with the exceptions of rape, incest or the life of the mother. Principles say, “If every fertilized egg is a human being whom God is forming in the womb (see Psalm 139), and if every human being is someone for whom God has great plans and purposes (see Jeremiah 29:11), then it does not matter how the egg was fertilized, only that it was fertilized. In the movie “Rob Roy” the brutal English practiced “prima nocta,” that is, the right for English nobles to impregnate Scottish and Irish women and, eventually, breed the Scots and Irish out of existence. While historians rightly challenge the belief that this was really practiced, the point here is when Rob Roy’s wife was impregnated by an English nobleman, Roy’s response was, “It’s not the child’s fault.” The point is obvious. Even rape does not justify the murder of the innocent child in the womb.

Talk about being completely counter-culture.

However, since less than 1% of abortions have anything to do with rape, incest, or the life of the mother, perhaps we must ask why taxpayers must pay for the elective surgeries of those who simply want to use abortion as birth control? Why should taxpayers have to pay for the sexual behaviors of another? Why should the “Oops, I didn’t want to get pregnant!” have to be “fixed” by dollars coming from someone not directly involved in the creation of the new human baby? We must begin by eliminating taxpayer funded "abortion as birth control" from our laws unless, of course, we believe that all elective surgeries for anyone at any time for any reason should be taxpayer funded. It might be “your body, your choice”. And, it is true that we should keep the government out of women’s wombs. Therefore, in order to “respect” freedom of choice and the desire to keep the government out of women’s wombs, we must remove taxpayer funding of abortion-on-demand for birth control. No taxpayer should have to pay for anyone else’s elective surgeries, including abortion. There are plenty of options available, especially adoption. Maybe we should be asking how we better fund the adoption option. Let’s support Life!

  • The Right to Liberty means political freedom.

The command not to kidnap or enslave confers a right to liberty (Exodus 21:16; Deuteronomy 24:7). The 3/5’s clause in the U.S. Constitution was meant to insure the eventual abolition of slavery in America. As much as we don’t want to admit it, slavery throughout the world was the norm, not the exception until Jefferson penned the Declaration. Most of us are not aware that William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, created local legislation outlawing slavery well before the writing of the Declaration. Several other “countries” (future states) followed. Northern and some Southern states began to move towards the abolition of the slave trade and, eventually, slave ownership, long before our Founders dedicated their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. What happened? King George of England struck down those laws. Except for some slave holders in South Carolina and Georgia, the Founders wanted to end slavery. It was the king and parliament that stopped them. (Maybe they should be sent the bill for reparations!) To quote John Eidsmoe from his book, “Christianity and the Constitution: The Faith of Our Founding Fathers,
"The equality of the Declaration, then, consists entirely in the equal entitlement of all to the rights which comprise political liberty, and nothing more. Thus Lincoln wisely interpreted the Declaration: ‘The authors of that noble instrument . . . did not intend to declare all men equal in all respects. They did not mean to say all were equal in color, size, intellect, moral developments, or social capacity. They defined with tolerable distinctness, in what rights they did consider all men created equal – equal in certain unalienable rights, among which are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.’”

  • What did Jefferson mean by “Pursuit of Happiness”?

Was Jefferson supplying citizens with a hedonistic “if it feels good, do it” justification concerning the pursuit of happiness or was it something deeper? At what point does the “pursuit of happiness” become anarchy and lawlessness? What does the phrase really mean? Here’s what the Founders meant by “the pursuit of happiness”:

  • Rigorous instruction of the people in good citizenship and the arts and sciences, both practical and “polite”.

  • The cultivation of religious piety within the limits of the right to liberty of conscience.

  • On the part of the individual, it entailed love of country and rigorous attention to the duty of making oneself as virtuous, moral and useful a member of society as possible.

“The matter provided an infallible criterion, by which the nation may judge of the intentions of those who govern it. If they endeavor to render the great and the common people virtuous, their views are pure and upright; and you may rest assured that they solely aim at the great end of government, the happiness and glory of the nation. On the other hand, if they corrupted the morals of the common people with permissiveness, thus spreading a ‘taste for luxury, effeminacy, a rage for licentious pleasures . . . beware citizens! Beware of those corruptors! They only aim at purchasing slaves in order to exercise oven them an arbitrary sway.’” (Eidsmoe, Christianity and the Constitution, p. 366).
The “pursuit of happiness,” therefore, was and is always, about pleasing God and building a morally virtuous nation led by morally virtuous people.

At Restore Minnesota, we simply refer to it as “Restoring Righteousness”.

May God’s Holy Spirit breeze though Minnesota even now, since he said, “Consecrate yourselves. I am about to revive and restore Minnesota.”

May it be soon, Lord. May it be very, very soon.

A Short Recap of the 2024 MN Legislative Session

Victories!!

Some Bad Legislation was Stopped or Fixed!
  • ERA (Un-equal Rights Amendment) STOPPED!!!!
  • Religious Liberty RESTORED to the Human Rights Act!
  • Assisted suicides did NOT advance!
  • Ranked Choice Voting (the watering down of candidate selection) Stopped! (for now)
  • "Sanctuary State" status was halted for now!
    • Law enforcement can still assist ICE when dealing with illegal immigration
    • But, MN does provide free college; health insurance and driver's licenses to illegal immigrants ... all put into law last year!
  • School Resource Officer (SRO) clarification resolved!
  • Protecting the Rainbow flag in schools and government buildings - Stalled!
  • Year-round Session/Full-Time Legislators – Stopped!

All of the above will be pushed next year if the Trifecta remains in place! Time to restore balance and flip the House this Fall!

Challenges
Please know that much of what happened during the last 2 weeks of session is still being digested and compiled.  Here are a few lowlights to start with ...

  • HF 5247 Conference Report: This Omnibus of Omnibus bills was the Democrats Way to "clear the end of session log jam".  In the last hours of session they added all remaining bills onto an open conferences report and possessed the bill in the last hour with no opportunity for the Republicans to discuss or ask questions. The bill had not yet been added to the online registry while it was being voted on.  This Bill had over 1,400 double sided pages and included legislation dealing with Transportation, Housing, Labor, Scope of Practice, Higher Education, Gun Control, AG, Energy, DHS, HHS, Paid Family Leave, and the Tax Bill. It will take one person over 30 hours to read this bill beginning to end.

  • Health Insurances are mandated to cover Abortions starting Jan. of 2025

  • More Mandates - Counties will be mandated to provide Pop-up voting booths for college campuses

  • More Regulations, Taxes and Fees: last year the trifecta spent over $18 Billion of our surplus, raised taxes and fees by $10 Billion, and grew government by 40%. This year in the last minutes of session they again rammed through a Billion dollar tax increase.

  • Medical Billing changes making it more expensive and difficult for small practices

  • More Infringement on our 2nd Amendment Rights: Last year Red Flag laws (guilty until proven innocent) and Universal background checks (cannot let a friend use your gun while hunting together) - this year more infringements, if a person does not report a stolen gun they will face criminal charges. Straw purchases and ban binary triggers, Stricter laws and punishments for law abiding citizens while lightening sentences for criminals.
